Synthetic graphite (electrographite)

1. Artificial graphite (electrographite) is a type of carbon, usually prepared in electric furnaces by heating a mixture of finely ground coke (usually petroleum coke, but sometimes anthracite, retort, or pitch coke, etc.) and carbonaceous binders (such as pitch or gudron) at sufficiently high temperatures (2500 - 3200 degrees C), to ensure their "graphitization" under the catalytic effect of substances present in the mixture (for example, silica or iron oxide). Initially, the mixture is extruded or formed under pressure into "immature" blocks with square or round cross-sections. These blocks can be pre-fired at a temperature of about 1000 degrees C and then "graphitized", or they may be obtained directly in the graphitization process.

The product obtained in this way has an apparent specific gravity of approximately 1.5 - 1.6 and a homogeneous microcrystalline structure; X-ray analysis shows that it is graphite. Chemical analysis confirms that this substance is graphite (precipitation of graphite acid).
