spermaceti

Spermaceti is a waxy substance extracted from the fat or oil contained in the cranial cavity or subcutaneous ducts of sperm whales and similar cetaceans.

Raw spermaceti, which consists of one third pure spermaceti and two thirds fat, appears as yellowish or brownish lumps with an unpleasant odor.

Pressed spermaceti is obtained after the removal of all the fat. It has the form of small hard scales of a yellowish-brown color and almost does not leave stains on paper.

Refined spermaceti is produced by treating pressed spermaceti with diluted caustic soda. It appears as clean white shiny strips with a pearly luster.

Spermaceti is used in the production of certain types of candles, in perfumery, in pharmacy or as a lubricant
