Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda)
Sodium hydroxide is produced, for example, by caustication of sodium carbonate with lime milk or by electrolysis of sodium chloride. It may exist both in aqueous solution and in anhydrous solid form. By evaporating the aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, solid sodium hydroxide is obtained in the form of flakes or chunks. Pure product is presented as tablets or cubes and stored in glassware.
In solid form, sodium hydroxide corrodes skin and irritates mucous membranes. It is highly hygroscopic and dissolves well in water; therefore it should be stored in tightly sealed steel containers.
Sodium hydroxide is a strong base and is widely used in industry: for the production of certain types of wood pulp by removing lignin, in the manufacture of regenerated cellulose, mercerization of cotton, in tantalum or niobium metallurgy, in the production of solid soaps, many chemical products including phenolic compounds (phenol, resorcinol, alizarin, etc.)
