Provitamin D.
1. Unirradiated ergosterol or provitamin D2. Ergosterol is found in rye ergot, in beer yeast, in mushrooms and other fungal organisms. It does not have the activity of vitamins. White flakes that turn yellow on exposure to air; insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and benzene.
2. Unirradiated 7-dehydrocholesterol or provitamin D3. Found in animal skin. Extracted from sheep fat or from by-products obtained during lecithin production. Plates, insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
3. Unirradiated 22,23-dihydroergosterol or provitamin D4.
4. Unirradiated 7-dehydro-beta-sitosterol or provitamin D5.
5. Unirradiated ergosterol acetate.
6. Unirradiated 7-dehydrocholesterol acetate.
7. Unirradiated 22,23-dihydroergosterol acetate
