Solvent (diluent)
Solvent, thinner, dispersion medium (hereinafter - solvent) - one of the main components of coatings, representing a single- or multi-component liquid that evaporates under certain drying conditions. Depending on its nature, coatings can be divided into two groups: organosoluble and water-dispersible. In water-dispersible coatings, the solvent is water. In organosoluble coatings, solvents are volatile liquids such as white spirit, aromatic hydrocarbons, turpentine, alcohols, ketones, etc., or their mixtures (complex organic solvents). These substances are added to dissolve components, provide coatings with appropriate flow and consistency in order to facilitate their application. Some types of coatings (usually based on liquid epoxy resins and polyurethanes) may not contain solvents.
