Iodine compounds


1. Hydrogen iodide (HI). A colorless suffocating gas that easily decomposes. Usually exists in the form of caustic aqueous solutions (hydroiodic acid), which in concentrated form "fumes" in moist air. Used in organic synthesis as a reducing agent or as a medium for iodine fixation.

2. Iodic acid (HIO3) and its anhydride (I2O5) exist in the form of prismatic crystals or aqueous solutions. Used in medicine or as absorbent agents in gas masks.

3. Periodic acid (HIO4·2H2O). Possesses properties similar to iodic acid
