Synchronous Optical Network
Synchronous Optical Network - a network providing management, multiplexing and access means for various forms of digital traffic using the synchronous transmission format over optical fibers. This format is the North American version of SDH and also uses the synchronous transport module. However, it uses the synchronous transport signal as the primary (base) module with a first level speed of 51.81 Mbps. (the SONET standard is integrated into SDH standards) (category 5)
