Wood Drying

Shrinkage refers to the reduction of linear dimensions and volume of wood due to the removal of bound water from it. Free moisture evaporates relatively quickly from wood and does not cause changes in its dimensions; only the mass decreases. Shrinkage begins at the moment when hygroscopic moisture starts to evaporate, i.e., when the humidity of the wood decreases from the fiber saturation point to a completely dry state.
