Chlorosulfonic acid


Chlorosulfonic acid, known in trade as "sulfur chlorohydrin" and having the chemical formula ClSO2OH, is formed by the dry reaction of hydrogen chloride with sulfur trioxide or fuming sulfuric acid.

It is a colorless or brownish liquid with an irritating odor and strong corrosive properties; it "fumes" in a humid atmosphere, decomposes upon contact with water or when heated.

It is used in organic synthesis (production of saccharin, thiindigo, indigotol, etc.)
