Codeine

Codeine is a synthetic opioid of moderate analgesic potency (0.1 the potency of morphine) and belongs to the category of narcotic drugs. It is used for pain of moderate intensity. The main side effects are constipation, nausea and vomiting may occur. There is also a possibility of developing physical and psychological dependence. Due to its short duration of action, codeine phosphate (tablets, powder) is administered every 4 hours in doses of 10 - 30 mg (maximum daily dose 100 mg). The sustained-release form of codeine, dihydrocodeine (DHC), has a duration of action up to 12 hours. The usual single dose of DHC is 60 mg, the maximum daily dose is 300 mg. Codeine is used for the treatment of moderate intensity chronic pain, but it is less preferred than tramadol, as it causes persistent constipation and is less available due to its classification as a narcotic drug.
