Public cryptographic key

A public key is a cryptographic key that is related to a private key through a special mathematical relationship. The public key is known to all other users of the system; it is used for verifying electronic digital signatures and decrypting, allowing identification of the signature author and the reliability of an electronic document, but does not allow calculation of the private key. A public key is considered to belong to a user if it has been registered (certified) in accordance with established procedures.
