Natural uranium consists of three isotopes: uranium-238, which constitutes 99.28% of the total mass, uranium-235, which constitutes 0.71%, and a negligible amount (approximately 0.006%) of uranium-234. Therefore, natural uranium can be considered both as a fissile material (due to the presence of uranium-235) and as a fertile material (due to the presence of uranium-238).

Uranium is mainly extracted from uranium ore, uraninite, autunite, brannerite, carnotite or torbernite. It is also recovered from other secondary sources such as phosphoric acid production waste or gold mining residues. A common process involves the reduction of tetrafluoride using calcium or magnesium or by electrolysis.

Uranium is a weakly radioactive element, very heavy (relative density 19) and hard. It has a bright silver-gray surface but darkens upon contact with atmospheric oxygen, forming oxides. In powder form it oxidizes and ignites rapidly when exposed to air.

Uranium is usually sold in the form of ingots suitable for polishing, sawing, rolling, etc. (to produce bars and rods, tubes, sheets, wire, etc.)
