Whooping cough

Whooping cough is an acute anthropozoonotic infectious disease transmitted by the airborne droplet route and characterized by a prolonged, distinctive spasmodic cough accompanied by signs of intoxication and damage to the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

The causative agent of whooping cough is B. pertussis. The whooping cough microbe has several serotypes that differ in their degree of pathogenicity.

The source of infection is only a person suffering from whooping cough. Transmission of the infectious agent occurs through the air via the smallest droplets of mucus released by the patient during forced exhalation (loud speech, crying, coughing, sneezing). The most intense transmission of infection occurs during coughing.
