Metal oxides
Metal oxides are compounds of metals with oxygen. Many of them can combine with one or several molecules of water to form hydroxides.
Most oxides are basic, as their hydroxides behave as bases. However, some oxides (acidic oxides, or anhydrides) form salts only in reactions with bases or other bases, while a sufficiently common class of oxides are amphoteric oxides, which exhibit both acidic and basic properties. These last two classes of oxides should be considered as oxides, or anhydrides, of acids, real or hypothetical, corresponding to their hydroxides.
Some oxides (salt-like) can be viewed as the result of interaction between a basic oxide and an acidic oxide
