Silicon compounds
Silicon dioxide (pure silica, silicic acid anhydride, etc.) (SiO2). It is obtained by the action of acids on silicate solutions or by decomposition of silicon halides with water at elevated temperatures.
It can exist either in an amorphous form (as a white powder, "white silica", "silica color", "fused silicon dioxide"; as glass-like granules - "transparent quartz glass"; in a pasty state - "hydrated silicon dioxide"), or in the form of crystals (tridymite and cristobalite).
Silicon dioxide is resistant to the action of acids, therefore fused silicon dioxide is used for manufacturing laboratory equipment and industrial apparatus that can be subjected to abrupt temperature changes (see general provisions for group 70). A finely dispersed powder of silicon dioxide is used as a filler in paint and varnish production. Activated silica gel is used for drying gases.
