Sapropelic Clays
Sapropel muds are organogenic bottom deposits mainly found in freshwater bodies. The area of their distribution coincides with the zone of peat muds distribution. Sapropels, as a rule, are non-sulfidic, freshwater sediments with varying ash content (from 10 to 90%). The therapeutic significance of sapropel muds is primarily determined by their high thermal properties (sapropels surpass even medicinal peat in this respect), the presence of large amounts of organic substances - humic, water-soluble (hemocellulose), bitumens, as well as biostimulators - vitamins, enzymes, hormones. The traditional region for using sapropel muds in Russia is the Urals and the Trans-Urals; abroad it includes Belarus, occasionally Estonia, Poland, and the eastern part of Germany.
