Rock Deformation

19. Rock deformation - a change in the shape and volume of rocks under the influence of various types of forces (gravitational, seismic, external overburden from mining and transport equipment, etc.). There are three types of deformations: elastic, plastic, and brittle. In elastic deformations, the body returns to its original shape after the load is removed. Plastic and brittle deformations are irreversible. Most rocks undergo all three stages of deformation when subjected to increasing loads. In clayey rocks, elastic deformation is practically absent1
