Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a delayed (from several weeks to six months after the trauma) and/or prolonged reaction to a stressful event or situation (e.g., natural or man-made disasters, combat, witnessing violent death of others, being a victim of torture, terrorism, rape, etc.).

Typical features include episodes of re-experiencing the trauma in the form of intrusive memories, dreams or nightmares occurring against the background of chronic feelings of "numbness" and emotional blunting, detachment from other people, lack of reaction to the surrounding environment, anhedonia, and avoidance of situations reminiscent of the trauma.
