Nitrogen compounds


1. Hydrogen azide (hydrazoic acid) (HN3). A colorless toxic liquid with a suffocating odor; highly soluble in water; unstable and possesses explosive properties. Its salts (azides) are classified under commodity position 2850, not subgroup V.

2. Dinitrogen monoxide (nitrous oxide) (N2O). A sweet-smelling gas soluble in water, usually stored in liquid form. In gaseous state it is used as an anesthetic, and in liquid and solid states it is used as a refrigerant.

3. Nitrogen dioxide (nitroxyl, nitrous fumes, "nitrogen peroxide") (NO2). At 0 degrees Celsius it is a colorless liquid; at higher temperatures it turns orange-brown; boiling point around 22 degrees Celsius (at which it emits red vapors). It is the most stable nitrogen oxide. It is a strong oxidizer1
