Boric acid

Boric acid (orthoboric acid) (H3BO3) is obtained either by the acid decomposition of natural borates or by physico-chemical treatment of unrefined boric acid.

It exists in the form of powder or small scales, mica-like flakes or glassy pieces with transparent edges, in a greyish or bluish (crystallized acid) color. It has no odor and is greasy to the touch.

It is used in the following areas: as an antiseptic (boric water); for the production of borosilicate glass (low expansion coefficient), vitrified compounds, Ginev's green (hydrated chromium oxide), artificial borates (borax), hydroxy- and aminoanthraquinones; for impregnating candle wicks; for fireproof fabrics
