Ignition Coils
D. Ignition coils.
Are specially modified induction coils, usually placed in a cylindrical housing. By connecting the primary winding through a breaker to the battery, it is possible to generate high-voltage current in the secondary winding, which is supplied via the distributor to the spark plugs.
In some ignition systems, the dual-spark coil is directly connected to two spark plugs and produces a spark simultaneously on each plug. The spark of one plug in one cylinder causes the power stroke, while the spark of the other plug has no effect on its cylinder because it occurs during the exhaust stroke. Such systems do not require a distributor since the ignition coil is directly connected to the spark plugs. In these systems, voltage to the coils is supplied from an electronic (semiconductor) module.
