Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established in 1967 and is a subregional organization whose initial members were states following a market-oriented model of economic development, namely Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. In July 1995, Vietnam joined ASEAN as a member, and in 1997 - Myanmar and Laos. Currently, consultations are underway regarding Cambodia's accession to the organization. The Association defines its main objective not only as maintaining peace and stability in Southeast Asia but also addressing political, economic, and, to some extent, military issues.
