Gas Discharge Lamps

They consist of a glass bulb (usually in the form of a tube) or a quartz bulb (usually enclosed within an external glass bulb), equipped with electrodes and containing either a gas that becomes luminous under the influence of an electric discharge at low pressure, or a substance emitting vapor with similar properties; some lamps may contain both gas and a substance forming vapor. Some lamps have valves for removing compounds formed as a result of the gas's effect on the electrodes; others may be equipped with a vacuum jacket or cooled by water. In some cases, the inner wall of the lamps is coated with special substances that convert ultraviolet rays into visible light, thereby increasing the lamp's light output (fluorescent lamps). Some lamps operate at high voltages, while others operate at low voltages.
