Carboxymethylcellulose


Sodium carboxymethylcellulose (poly-1,4beta-O-carboxymethyl-D-pyranosyl-D-glucopyranose sodium) is a polymeric simple ether of cellulose and the sodium salt of glycolic acid. It is produced by the interaction of alkali cellulose with the sodium salt of monochloroacetic acid. In various types of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, the content of carboxymethyl groups ranges from 0.5 to 1.2 per elementary unit of the macromolecule
