Applied Control Means in Audit
93. Application controls are procedures, automated or manual, that are typically used at the level of processing financial transactions. Application controls may be either preventive or detective and are intended to ensure the accuracy of accounting records. Application controls are related to procedures used for initiating transactions, recording, processing, and summarizing financial transactions or other financial information. These control measures help ensure that the financial transactions actually occurred, were properly authorized, and were fully and accurately recorded and processed by information systems.
Examples of applied control tools may include computer-based testing of input data or control of sequential numbering of input documents, followed by providing personnel performing accounting functions with messages or references regarding identified discrepancies. Personnel could then correct such errors and inconsistencies either at the moment of input or subsequently.
