Colorimeters

7. Colorimeters. The term "colorimeter" refers to two different classes of instruments. One class is used for determining the color of a substance (liquid or solid) by comparing its color with the color obtained from three primary colors (red, green and blue), mixed in variable but measurable proportions. The second class of colorimeters are used in chemical or biochemical analysis to determine the concentration of a substance contained in a solution by comparing the color of this substance (or the color of the substance after treatment with a reagent) with the color of colored reference plates or reference liquid. In one type of colorimeter of the latter class, the test solution and the reference solution are contained in two glass tubes, which are viewed through an eyepiece using two prisms. Some of these instruments are based on the use of a photovoltaic cell. In some instruments of this type, a paper tape with a reagent that changes its color after reacting with a gas is used. Two photovoltaic cells are used in these instruments to measure the color before and after reaction with the gas
