Hygroscopicity
Hygroscopicity - the ability of wood to change its moisture content depending on the temperature-humidity conditions of the surrounding air. Wet wood easily releases moisture to the surrounding air; dry wood, conversely, readily absorbs it. Thus, absolutely dry wood absorbs water vapor from the air until its humidity matches that of the surrounding air's humidity and temperature
