Promoines (Proparins)
Promoines (proparyny) - open water areas that appear in previously continuous ice cover, where the ice has been eroded through its entire thickness. They form in places of abundant groundwater outflow, discharge of warm water from industrial enterprises, at the sources of rivers flowing out of lakes, and at the mouths of tributaries with warmer water. Depending on the severity of winter, formed promoines may either gradually freeze over or persist throughout the winter until ice breakup. Promoines at the sources of large rivers flowing out of lakes usually rapidly expand in the second half of winter, and the river breaks up without an ice jam. During the spring period, promoines typically form just before ice breakup due to melting of ice in areas with fast currents where the ice cover is generally thinner. The observer notes approximate sizes of promoines (length and width in meters). When the promoine expands to more than one-third of the river's width, the condition of the ice cover should be noted as residual ice ridges
