Progesterone

Progestins - a class of steroid hormones named after their gestagenic effects, which are important in the occurrence and development of pregnancy. These female sex hormones are produced in the uterus upon the onset and for the maintenance of pregnancy. Due to their ability to prevent ovulation, they are used as components of contraceptive agents. They include:

a) progesterone (INN). The main human progestin and an intermediate product in the biosynthesis of estrogens, androgens, and corticosteroids. It is produced by the cells of the corpus luteum after ovulation, as well as by the adrenal glands, placenta, and male gonads;

b) pregnadiol - a naturally occurring progestin with much lower physiological activity than progesterone
