Security measure

Security measure (Fr.: mesure de surete; Ger.: Massregel der Sicherung) - a special form of legal coercion, which in several countries may be imposed by court judgment in criminal cases instead of punishment or alongside it. Security measures are divided into those involving deprivation of liberty and those that do not have such consequences. Security measures involving deprivation of liberty include, for example, preventive detention for "habitual offenders" (in the United Kingdom, this was imposed for a period of 5 - 10 years together with punishment; similar measure is also provided by the Criminal Code of Germany); placement in psychiatric, rehabilitative or special educational centres (Spain). In Russia, varieties of such measures may be considered as "compulsory medical measures" (Part VI of the Russian Federation Criminal Code).
