3.3. Extractors and solvent extraction equipment
Introductory remark
Both the solution of irradiated fuel from dissolvers and organic solvent, which is used to separate uranium, plutonium and fission products, enter into solvent extractors. Solvent extraction equipment is usually designed in such a way that it meets strict operational requirements, such as long service life without maintenance or easy replaceability, simplicity in operation and control, as well as flexibility with respect to changes in process parameters.
Extractor units specifically designed or prepared with solvent, such as packed or pulsation columns, mixing-settling devices or centrifugal contactors for use in the facility for processing irradiated fuel. Solvent extractors must be resistant to the corrosive effects of nitric acid. Solvent extractors are usually manufactured using extremely high requirements (including application of special welding methods, inspections, assurance and quality control) from low-carbon stainless steels, titanium, zirconium or other high-quality materials
