Tallow oil (liquid rosin)

Tall oil (sometimes known as liquid rosin) is obtained from black liquor remaining in the production of wood pulp by the alkaline or sulfate method. When this liquor is poured into a settling tank, a foamy mass forms on its surface. Crude tall oil is obtained after heating and acidification of this foamy mass, usually diluted with sulfuric acid.

Crude tall oil is a dark brown, semi-liquid mixture of fatty acids (mainly oleic, linoleic and their isomers), rosin acids (especially abietic) and a small amount of non-saponifiable substances (sterols, higher alcohols and various impurities) in proportions varying depending on the type of wood.
