Diphtheritic croup

5.4. Diphtheritic croup - in young children, the sequential appearance of cough and hoarseness, their intensification (catarrhal stage during 1 - 3 days), followed by the development of fibrinous deposits in the larynx, leading to obstructive breathing (difficulty in inhalation) with a gradual increase in the degree of stenosis over 2 - 3 days (stenotic stage), and asphyxia after 5 - 6 days from the onset of the disease; in older children and adults - cough and hoarseness lasting for 6 - 8 days, when obstructive breathing is absent despite the formation of fibrinous membranes in the respiratory tract. Respiratory obstruction marks the beginning of the preasphyctic phase, initially occurring in paroxysms, then becoming constant. The duration of the preasphyctic phase is 2 days, at the end of which asphyxia occurs.
