Fullerenes

Fullerenes are nanoparticles composed of a specific (usually 60 or 70) number of carbon atoms arranged in a spherical framework. Fullerenes can be considered as a distinct allotrope of carbon, not identical to the two previously known forms - diamond and graphite. The form of fullerene release includes powders or solutions in organic solvents, as well as nanofilms (up to 20 nm thick). This group also includes chemically modified fullerenes: hydroxylated, halogenated, linked with amino acids and metals. Unmodified fullerenes are practically insoluble in water and polar solvents, as well as in aliphatic hydrocarbons and fats; they are moderately soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene). It is possible to obtain colloidal (micellar) aqueous solutions of fullerenes in complex with certain surfactants and polymers. Many chemically modified fullerenes are well soluble in water. True (molecular) fullerene solutions are colored (have a red or purple color), and have a characteristic absorption maximum in the near ultraviolet at a wavelength of 324 - 340 nm
