Stroboscopes

Stroboscopes allow moving machines to be observed as if they were moving slowly or stationary; they can also be used to measure rotational speed or the speed of reciprocating motion. In the latter case, they are known under a more specific name, stroboscopic tachometers. Stroboscopes operate on the principle of creating an appearance of stillness or reduced speed in the observed mechanism by means of successive brief flashes of light (flashes) at fixed time intervals. The observed mechanism may be continuously illuminated for study using an optical device (a disc with one or several radial slits or "windows") that crosses the line of sight; alternatively, the mechanism may be placed in darkness and periodically illuminated for very short periods (flashes). The speed of a rotating or reciprocating mechanism can be determined by adjusting the speed of the disc or the frequency of flashes until an impression of stillness is achieved.
