Raw glycerin
Crude glycerin is a product with purity less than 95% (on a dry matter basis). It can be obtained by splitting fats or oils or synthetically from propylene. Its quality varies depending on the method of production, for example:
1) obtained by hydrolysis with water, acids or alkalis - a sweetish liquid with a pleasant odor, in color from yellowish to brown;
2) obtained from glycerine soap - a pale yellow liquid with an unpleasant odor and astringent taste;
3) obtained from soap-making residues - a dark-yellow liquid with a sweetish taste (sometimes resembling garlic if there are a lot of impurities) and more or less unpleasant odor;
4) obtained by catalytic and enzymatic hydrolysis - usually a liquid with an unpleasant taste and odor, containing a large amount of organic and mineral substances.
Crude glycerin can also be obtained by transesterification of oils or fats with other alcohols
