Promedol
Promedol is a synthetic opioid with strong analgesic effects, although less pronounced than those of morphine and omnopon. It is rapidly absorbed both when taken orally and when administered parenterally. It is available as an injection solution in ampoules (10 and 20 mg in 1 ml) and as tablets for oral administration (25 mg). Its effect is short-lived - 3 to 4 hours. The side effects of promedol are less pronounced than those of morphine. It is used for postoperative pain relief after surgical operations, in trauma, hepatic and renal colic (has some spasmolytic action), and other forms of severe acute pain. The usual single dose is 10 - 20 mg, the maximum - 30 mg. The highest daily dose subcutaneously is 160 mg, orally 200 mg. It is not indicated for long-term therapy of chronic pain due to the risk of accumulation of toxic metabolites
