Hepatitis B virus

4.1. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the main representative of the family Hepadnaviridae. This DNA-containing virus has a size of 42 - 45 nm and a relatively complex structure. The main antigens of the pathogen are: surface (HBsAg), core (HBcAg), and E (HBeAg). HBsAg is a protein forming the outer shell of the virus, and serves as a screening marker for HBV infection. HBcAg is a protein that forms the inner shell of the virus (nucleocapsid). It can be detected only during morphological examination of biopsy or autopsy liver material and is not determined in blood serum. HBeAg does not form part of the viral structure, but its presence in blood serum indicates active replication of HBV.
