Radiation Disease
A general disease of the body developing as a result of exposure to large doses of ionizing radiation. Acute radiation sickness (ARS) and chronic radiation sickness (CRS) are distinguished. ARS occurs after short-term (minutes, hours, up to 2 days) external irradiation at doses exceeding the threshold value (more than 1 Gy); it is characterized by a combination of damage to organs and tissues (specific syndromes). The modern classification of ARS is based on firmly established in experiments and clinical practice dose-dependent effects on individual critical organs, the disruption of whose functional state determines the form of ARS. In the case of external relatively uniform irradiation, the following clinical forms of ARS are distinguished: hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, toxic, and cerebral. Chronic radiation sickness from external irradiation occurs due to prolonged exposure at doses exceeding 1 Gy/year
