Plasma is the liquid part of blood devoid of cellular elements. The normal volume of plasma constitutes about 4% of total body weight (40 - 45 ml/kg). Plasma components maintain the normal volume of circulating blood and its liquid state. Plasma proteins determine its colloidal-osmotic pressure and balance with hydrostatic pressure; they also maintain the systems of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis in equilibrium.
