Parahemolytic vibrios

Parahaemolytic vibrios are conditionally pathogenic halophilic microorganisms of the Vibrionaceae family that inhabit saline water bodies. They are isolated from seawater, fish, shrimp, mussels, oysters, lobsters, and crabs. V. parahaemolyticus was first recognized as the cause of a large outbreak of toxic infections in Japan in 1950, associated with consumption of slightly salted fish. Large outbreaks were recorded between 1984 and 1986 along the coasts of the Black Sea and Azov Sea in Berdyansk, Mariupol, Nikolaev, Kerch. Sporadic cases occurred along the coasts of the Baltic and Japanese Seas, as well as in salt lakes of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. In Vladivostok, outbreaks of acute intestinal infections caused by this species of vibrios were registered in 1997 and 2001. The mode of transmission was boiled-frozen shrimp and other seafood products. In 2001, group cases of acute intestinal diseases associated with the consumption of salted dried sardines contaminated with parahaemolytic vibrios were recorded in Zaporizhia region of Ukraine
