Siliceous Infusorian Earths
This raw material consists of siliceous earths formed mainly from small fossilized organisms (diatoms, etc.), and is very light. The "apparent specific gravity" of siliceous earths should not exceed 1; it should be taken as their effective weight in kg/1000 cm³, which refers to the raw material not in a compressed form but in the form in which they usually exist in nature.
The main types of siliceous earths are kieselguhr, tripolite, diatomite and foraminiferal earth. Although certain types of rocks included in this commodity position are sometimes referred to as "tripolite", they should not be confused with genuine foraminiferal earth known as "red stone", which, because it is formed as a result of the natural disintegration of certain rocks, is not diatomaceous earth. This latter product, which is used as a soft abrasive for polishing, is included in commodity position 2513
