Hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid)
Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is a colorless fuming gas with a suffocating odor, produced by the action of hydrogen (or water and coke) on chlorine or by the action of sulfuric acid on sodium chloride.
It is easily liquefied under pressure and highly soluble in water. It is stored under pressure as a liquid in steel cylinders. It is also supplied in concentrated aqueous solutions (usually 28 - 38%) (hydrochloric acid) in glass, ceramic containers or in railway and road tankers with rubber lining. In pure form these solutions are colorless with an acrid odor; when impurities are present (iron chloride, arsenic, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid), they have a yellowish color. On moist air above concentrated solutions, white "smoke" appears.
Hydrochloric acid has numerous applications, such as etching iron, zinc and other metals, extracting gelatin from bones, cleaning animal charcoal, obtaining metal chlorides, etc. Gaseous hydrogen chloride is often used in organic synthesis (for example, in the production of chloroprene, vinyl chloride, synthetic camphor, rubber hydrochloride)
