Global Information Network
The global information network encompasses a collection of electronic computers (ECs) that may be located at any points on Earth, connected to each other via long-distance communication channels (switched or dedicated), provided by telephone companies or other communications enterprises. The global information network provides users with the opportunity to exchange information, jointly use technical and software means, and information resources. The global network can be either publicly accessible (the Internet, e-mail) or specialized (corporate or departmental - Extranet, Intranet). If a computer can receive or send information in electronic form to remote computers located outside the boundaries of one or several adjacent buildings, it is considered connected to the global network regardless of the equipment, software, protocols, and regulations used for information exchange.
