31. Landslide - rapid displacement of rock masses or blocks and packages of rocks forming a slope, accompanied by crushing of the displaced part of the massif. The detachment surface of the sliding rocks from the main massif usually coincides with various types of discontinuities in the massif (large cracks, bedding planes, tectonic disturbances, etc.) and lies at an angle greater than the angle of internal friction; therefore, after overcoming the cohesion forces, the detached mass cannot be held by frictional forces along this surface and moves downward toward the slope's toe. The active phase of the landslide occurs practically instantaneously
