Unrefined natural shellac

This sticky substance is produced by an insect belonging to the same family as cochineal and scale insects on some species of tropical trees.

The most important commercial grades of unrefined natural shellac are:

A. Sticklac, usually consisting of twigs on which shellac has been deposited in more or less thick layers; it is dark red in color and is the most intensely colored grade of unrefined natural shellac.

B. Granulated shellac, crushed unrefined natural shellac separated from branches usually by washing, during which part of its coloring matter is removed.

C. Shellac, also known as flake, lamellate or slabbalac, obtained by melting and filtering, which purifies it. It takes the form of thin glass-like flakes of amber or reddish color. A similar product in disk form is known as "disk shellac".

This type of shellac is mostly used for preparing varnishes, in the electrical industry, and for the production of sealing wax.

Residual shellac (or garnet shellac), which is obtained from the residues of shellac preparation.

Uncleaned natural shellac may also be decolored or bleached and sometimes may be presented in the form of twisted bundles
