Peritoneal dialysis


Peritoneal dialysis (PD) involves inserting a catheter into the patient's abdominal cavity through which a special solution - dialysate - is introduced. Upon entering the abdominal cavity, the dialysate absorbs all waste products and toxins, cleansing the blood. After four hours, the solution is drained from the peritoneum. Peritoneal dialysis allows patients to be free from hospital beds: it can be performed at home, at work, and wherever necessary. A contraindication for performing peritoneal dialysis is a previously experienced peritonitis, since peritoneal dialysis is conducted through the patient's peritoneum, unlike hemodialysis which is performed through a fistula
