Sulfur compounds

1. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S). A highly toxic colorless gas with a foul odor resembling rotten eggs. Stored under pressure in steel cylinders or as an aqueous solution (hydrogen sulfide acid). Used in analysis, for purification of sulfuric or hydrochloric acids, for production of sulfur dioxide or regenerated sulfur, etc.

2. Peroxosulfuric acids (sulfuric peroxoacids), existing in crystalline form:

a) peroxydisulfuric acid (H2S2O8) and its anhydride (S2O7);

b) peroxomonosulfuric acid (Caro's acid) (H2SO5), possesses strong hygroscopic and oxidizing properties.

3. Thiocarboxylic acids. Exist only in aqueous solution: dithionic acid (H2S2O6); trithionic acid (H2S3O6); tetrathionic acid (H2S4O6); pentathionic acid (H2S5O6).

4. Aminosulfonic acid (sulfamic acid) (SO2(OH)NH2). It is obtained by dissolving urea in sulfuric acid, sulfur trioxide or oleum; it is a crystalline substance, slightly soluble in water but well soluble in alcohol. It is used in the production of fire-resistant textile products, for tanning, in electroplating and in organic synthesis.

5. Sulfur dioxide (SO2). It is produced by burning sulfur, roasting natural sulfides (in particular pyrite) or natural calcium sulfate (e.g., anhydrite) with clay and coke. It is a colorless suffocating gas.

Sulfur dioxide is stored either in liquid form under pressure in steel containers or in aqueous solution; technical sulfur dioxide in aqueous solution is often incorrectly referred to as "sulfurous acid".

Acting as an active bleaching and reducing agent, sulfur dioxide is used, for example, in the bleaching of animal tissues, straw, feathers or gelatin, in the sulfite process of sugar refining, for preserving fruits and vegetables, for producing hydrosulfites for the treatment of wood pulp, for producing sulfuric acid or as a disinfectant (inhibiting fermentation of grape must). Liquid sulfur dioxide, which lowers temperature upon evaporation, is used in refrigeration units.

6. Sulfur trioxide (sulfur anhydride) (SO3). White solid needle-like crystals resembling asbestos in appearance. In moist air it "fumes"; it eagerly absorbs water and reacts vigorously with it. It is stored in airtight containers made of sheet iron or in glass and ceramic bottles for storing acids, equipped with an inorganic absorbent. It is used for the production of oleum (tariff heading 2807) and alum (tariff heading 2833).

7. Trisulfur dioxide (S2O3). Blistering green crystals that decompose upon contact with water and are soluble in alcohol; used as a reducing agent in the production of synthetic dyes
