Scale of Names

Scale of measurement for a qualitative property characterized only by the equivalence relation between different manifestations of this property.

Notes:

1. The set of manifestations (realizations) of a qualitative property can be ordered based on the criterion of proximity (similarity) and/or based on the criterion of possible quantitative differences in some subsets of property manifestations.

For example, color measurement scales are based on a three-coordinate model of the color space, ordered by color differences (qualitative characteristic) and brightness (quantitative characteristic).

2. Distinctive features of nominal scales: inapplicability of concepts such as zero, unit of measurement, dimension; admissibility only of isomorphic or homomorphic transformations; possibility of realization both with the use of standards and without them; inadmissibility of changing specifications describing specific scales. Nominal scales are most often defined by a series of "equivalence classes."
