Emergency Psychiatric Care
Emergency psychiatric care is a type of psychiatric care guaranteed by the state. Within the psychiatric service system, it plays a particularly important role. Specialized teams providing emergency psychiatric care have been functioning in our country since 1928. In the late 1950s - early 1960s they became more widely spread. At present, emergency psychiatric care is provided in cities in most regions of Russia. However, organizations providing this type of assistance still receive insufficient attention.
The main task of the psychiatric team is to provide emergency psychiatric care in cases of sudden onset or exacerbation of mental disorders at any location where the patient is present, including medical institutions. The assistance may be limited to medical procedures after examining the patient, recommending a visit to a psychiatric and neurological dispensary (department, office), or may be accompanied by hospitalization in a psychiatric ward. In addition, the psychiatric team performs the task of transporting mentally ill patients at the request of a psychiatrist using special motor vehicles and with the accompaniment of trained medical personnel.
